Never get a bad haircut ever again

The ultimate guide to finding the right hairstyle

Your hair defines more than just your face

When I was a kid I went to military school in Brazil where I had one haircut option: a buzzcut.  Imagine having to track your haircuts every 14 days in a book - that was my life.

When I moved to the US I finally had the chance to do something other than a buzzcut. This is when I started experimenting with things like hair gel, and actually ended up receiving compliments on my hair.  At the time I felt very foreign not being able to speak English, so these compliments gave me a newfound confidence in myself.

At the time I had no clue what having a good hairstyle could really do for me.

Fast forward while living in LA getting my haircut at Supercuts, I decided to try a bit more of a high-end salon, going from $17/cut to around $40/cut - a big deal for me at the time. But the guy who cut my hair was so knowledgeable, giving me all these of tips on hair, so it felt like I was really paying for knowledge.

It was at this point I started to feel so much better about my hair and how to style and maintain it properly at home. It’s amazing the kind of confidence the right hairstyle can build.

It’s the tips below that built the confidence I have now in my hair.  If they can work for me coming from Supercuts, they’ll absolutely work for you too.

NOTHING BEATS
A GREAT HAIRCUT

If there’s one feeling all guys can agree on, it’s the feeling of walking out of the barber when you just got a really good haircut.

Looking for an instant confidence booster?  Go get yourself a good haircut.

It all starts with choosing the right hairstyle, and there’s a few things you’ll want to consider…

Step 1: Work with your face shape

Depending on who you ask, guys can have anywhere between 5 and 9 face shapes. I’m breaking down some of the more common ones below but check out my full face shape breakdown here.

Square or oval face

If this is the shape of your face you’ve hit the lottery with hairstyles, most cuts are going to work for you. It will just come down how much maintenance you want to put into maintaining the style.

Looking for low maintenance?  Go with something short like a buzzcut or crew cut.

Got a bit more time to style it?  Keep a good 3-4 inches on top and go with a classic quiff or slick back.

Rounder/softer face

Guys with this face shape typically don’t have much definition within their jawline and so a hairstyle that has a bit more volume on top while keeping the sides tight elongates the face and helps make facial features pop.

A great option for this is a high fade or classic scissors cut paired with a pompadour or quiff depending on your preference and how much time you want to put into the style.

Long/narrow face

With a longer, oblong face, your hairstyle can help balance out your face’s length.  You can get away with some volume on top as long as it's neatly combed and paired with shorter sides.

Opt for crew or buzz cuts here - they’re simple, timeless, and give your face good proportion.  Avoid longer hair on the side as it only ends up framing your face and putting further emphasis on its length.

Step 2: Choose a cut that fits your hair type

Your hair’s texture is going to determine how easy (or hard) it will be to maintain the style you’re going for.

Guys with straight hair will want to stick to fades, undercuts, or side parts given these styles are clean but don’t require much effort to maintain.

If you’ve got wavy hair you can get away with a medium length style like a flow or tousled quiff to embrace your hair’s natural movement.

With curly hair, you’ve got a few options.  You can let it flow for a shaggy, refined look or taper down the sides to accent the curls on top, either with a crew cut or high fade.

While the key with thick hair is to opt for a layered cut to reduce the bulk on top and keep it structured on the sides.

Step 3: Speak your barber’s language

We’ve all been there, leaving the barbershop with a cut that you didn’t ask for…or did you?

Use this guide so the next time you speak to your barber, you’re speaking the same language:

What to ask for on the sides

  • Low fade, clipper cut that starts just above the ear for a subtle shaved look

  • Mid fade, starts around the temples blending the top and bottom half of your head

  • High fade, starts high around your forehead and is short all the way down

  • Taper, less dramatic than a fade with a smooth, blended finish

  • Classic short back and sides, done with scissors with a bit more length left on the sides

What to ask for on the top

  • Textured, which could look effortless and messy, great for a relaxed style

  • Layered, which adds shape and volume, ideal for wavy or thick hair

  • Natural flow, which works with your natural hair movement, very low maintenance

There’s also nothing wrong with asking to keep some extra length if that’s the look you’re going for.  If you aren’t satisfied with the length let your barber know, it’s your hair after all.

You should also let your barber know what your typical grooming routine is like so that they can match the cut to how much time you’re willing to spend on the style.

Step 4: Style it right

When it comes to styling your cut, keep it simple.  A solid shampoo and conditioner paired with a good styling clay goes a long way.

I’m biased but I know a lot of guys who get great results with the Forte Series Texture Clay, giving you a natural look with an all day hold without that greasy finish.

One of the first things people notice is your hair, setting the tone for your style and confidence.  Take the time to find the right style for you, knowing that your hair can always grow back if you get it wrong the first time.
